Mandela Day 2018 – Kuyasa Educare & GAPA

Home / News Blog / Mandela Day 2018 – Kuyasa Educare & GAPA

18 July 1918 is the day that marks the birth of the iconic, Nelson Mandela.

Every year on this day South Africans, and people from around the globe, celebrate and honor Tata Madiba’s legacy by devoting time to make a difference in their local community.

A small gesture of 67 minutes of your time is all that is requested – one minute for every year of Mandela’s public service.

Many companies and individuals partake in this movement every year. Just think if everyone around the world did this!

On Wednesday, 18 July 2018 we celebrated 100 years since Madiba’s birth!

Earthstompers & our sister company, Cape Food & Wine, joined forces with African Impact Volunteering in Cape Town, for the day. We got involved with two of their projects in Khayelitsha. Our team was represented by Cindy ( Marketing) and Rochelle (Super Guide).

Cindy and Rochelle spent half the day at Kuyasa Educare Centre, a preschool registered for 105 children under the age of 6. On Mandela Day 2017 we also joined African Impact on this project to help paint ceiling boards after the Cape Storm took off the one classroom’s entire roof! It was great to see the progress made over the course of a year and lovely to see the building fully in use again!

This year we helped the teachers in the classroom with basic skills development, assisting children with games, reading and playing. An extra pair of hands or two, go a long way in a busy classroom! In the afternoon we visited GAPA, Grandmothers Against Poverty and Aids, where we assisted with afternoon activities and games with the children.

We had such a lovely day with all the staff from African Impact and it was just amazing to be a part of their projects in the contagious, goodhearted spirit that is Mandela Day <3
