Welcome To Earthstompers Garden Route Adventures

Safari Extension

Add more wildlife experience to your tour by booking a safari extension. We have partnered with private game reserves in the Eastern Cape of South Africa to offer our clients an exceptional game viewing experience.

Safari extension

We are pleased to offer our clients the option of adding a safari extension to your Earthstompers 5-day Garden Route Tour.

The Eastern Cape of South Africa offers amazing opportunities to observe wildlife in their natural environment, without having to spend the time or expense to travel to the other parts of South Africa for safari, and with the added benefit of being malaria-free. This option is perfect for the traveler that has an extra 2-5 days available, and would like to have a true South African safari experience.

About the Private Game Reserves

We have personally investigated the various lodges and reserves in the Eastern Cape, to offer what we think is the best value for money. Reserves are large, ranging in size from 7 000 to 50 000 hectares. On the reserves, there are opportunities to see animals like elephant, giraffe, zebra, kudu, eland, gemsbok, lion, caracal, hippo, rhino, warthog, and many more. These are all "big 5" game reserves.

Accommodation Options & Prices

There are a variety of options available on the different reserves, ranging from a rustic 3 star tented camp in the bush to 5 star luxury. Regardless of where you stay, the lodges offer exceptional service, with game drives, meals, and many drinks included.

Prices per person per night range from R2180 to R7644, depending on season and type of lodge. When enquiring, please let us know which level (3 to 5 star) and which dates you are interested in, so that we can check availability and quote accordingly. We can then inform you of the exact price, lodge, and inclusions.

Itinerary

We recommend a minimum 2-night stay. Why? If you only stay for one night, then you are limited to one or two game drives. It is possible that you will see lots of animals on these two drives, but it is also possible that you would see very little! Game viewing requires patience, and luck has a lot to do with it. So don’t pin all of your hopes on one game drive; rather give yourself a few opportunities by booking at least two nights, doing 3-4 game drives.

Example 2-night itinerary:

Friday

  • ~13:00: pickup from Addo southern gate
  • Check in to game reserve
  • Afternoon game drive (1)
  • Dinner
  • Overnight

Saturday

  • Breakfast
  • Morning game drive (2)
  • Lunch
  • Afternoon game drive (3)
  • Dinner
  • Overnight

Sunday

  • Morning game drive (4) (if time allows before departure)
  • Travel from game reserve to Port Elizabeth Airport
  • Catch flight out of PE airport

Transfers & timing

The Earthstompers 5 Day Garden Route & Addo Adventure visits Addo Elephant National Park on Friday morning. After the park, we are very close to many private game reserves in the Eastern Cape (approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour drive). If you book a safari extension, we will arrange for your Earthstompers guide to drop you off at a central meeting point, and for the private game reserve to pick you up there (approximately 12:30 on Friday). You can spend as many nights as you desire on the game reserve, and then we will arrange for a transfer from the game reserve to Port Elizabeth (airport or city). You may then fly from Port Elizabeth onward to other South African destinations (Cape Town, Johannesburg, etc), and connect to further international flights. Transfer costs depend on the size of your group, starting from R950 each way.

On arrival to the game reserve on Friday afternoon, you will likely be in time for the afternoon game drive. On departure, if you would like to participate in the morning game drive, then your flight departing Port Elizabeth needs to be at 2:00pm or later. If you would like to book an earlier flight on your day of departure, you can, but you will then miss the morning game drive.

What to bring

In winter, make sure you have several layers of clothing, as early morning or late afternoon on the open game-viewing vehicle can be windy and cold! We recommend a windbreaker, warm jacket, fleece/sweater, hat, and gloves. In summer, a windbreaker/rain jacket is still a good idea, plus a hat and sunscreen. It is a good idea to have small bills available should you wish to give tips to your rangers or lodge staff.

Payment

The safari extension is payable to Earthstompers Adventures via EFT or Credit Card (through Paygate).  A 50% deposit is required to confirm, with the balance due 30 days before arrival.

Cancelation policy

The cancellation policy for the safari extension is the same as for your Garden Route tour.  Please note we will charge a cash-handling fee of 15% if you should cancel more than 30 days before departure to cover our bank charges.

30 days – 15 days: 25% of the total of the booking

14 days – 8 days: 50% of the total of the booking

7 days or less: 100% of the total of the booking

No-show: 100% of the total of the booking

Please note the safari extension is subject to availability. We unfortunately cannot provide live availability and pricing, as we must first contact the game reserves.  Please allow 12-24 hours for us to respond with a specific quote.
